A warm welcome to Glendal Primary School
Glendal Primary School, established in 1971, is situated on two and a half hectares of land in Glen Waverley. Glen Waverley is an eastern residential suburb of Melbourne, approximately twenty kilometres from the central business district. School enrolments are allocated to families living in the school zone and then from surrounding suburbs, when vacancies arise ( with the exception of Foundation enrolment). The school has a funded enrolment of 900 students in 2024. The student population reflects the characteristics of the surrounding community, with a diversity of backgrounds.
Facilities include an aministration building housing a conference room, community room (our Mi Café where parents can meet), Foundation classrooms, offices, Health Centre and staffroom. Other facilities include an arts centre; library and computer lab; a science building, with six classrooms, science and robotics areas and literacy spaces for Reading Recovery and English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes. A full-sized gymnasium and a performing arts centre accommodate assemblies (separated into Junior, Middle and Senior), concerts and musical performances, as well as music and physical education classes. There are thirty five classrooms.
The 2024 staffing profile consisted of 75 full time/ part time teaching staff ,with complementary support staff. Our Leadership Team comprises of a Principal, three Assistant Principals, two Leading Teachers and three Learning Specialists.
The school’s curriculum framework incorporates the eight learning areas, required by the Education and Training Reform Act 2006, aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and incorporating strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. An integrated approach to learning incorporates the explicit teaching of thinking and problem solving skills and a well-resourced STEM and digital technologies program.
In addition, a range of extra curricula and other opportunities are provided to students. These include specialist programs consisting of Library, physical education and sport, music and performing arts, visual arts and two Languages Other Than English - LOTE (Mandarin in Foundation to Year 6 and French in Years 5 and 6) and a specialist science and technology/robotics program across the school.
Support and enrichment programs are offered including Science Talent Search, Chess, Robotics, a wide range of sports, filmmaking, choir, Bollywood and Chinese dancing, orchestra, band and performing arts productions.
Our EAL teaching program caters for a large number of students who speak a language other than English at home, mostly from a South or South-Eastern Asian country. 65% of our students speak at least one of 30 Languages other than English at home, including Mandarin,Sinhalese,Cantonese,Hindi and Tamil.
The school has a global relations program, that includes communication with Joint Environmental Mission sister schools in the USA (Pennsylvania and Hawaii). This program is an integral part of the school wide ‘Sustainability and the Environment’ program.
